In autumn 2012 we were invited by Platz-da!? to Vienna to participate in a lecture at a discussion event on collective critical mapping. Platz-da!? is an open / participative campaign of various initiatives, groups and people with the aim of raising awareness of the issues of free and public space, vacancy, social standardization and gentrification of the urban population of Vienna. The group also reported on the experiences they had made in their collective critical mapping of the “Urban Commons” in Vienna. The following day, we accompanied the activists to two mapping workshops in public space, in which, like in Graz, casual visitors of the public space were involved in map making and local socio-spatial conflicts and perspectives were reflected on. We not only got to know very different people and their districts, but also the advantages and disadvantages of a mapping bike.
