A large part of Berlin’s population connects the Tempelhof Field and Airport with the Berlin Airbridge, wherby the place is characterized in the collective consciousness in the post-war period, especially as the “gateway to freedom“.
But that the airport and the Tempelhof field were an important part of the Nazi propaganda machinery and that numerous Nazi crimes took place here or originated from it is unfortunately less and less known.
Today the Tempelhofer Field is primarily a huge leisure and recreation area in the middle of the city, which is unique, but which is also very contested between the various interests in a growing city.
On this walk we want to look at the historical development, especially the dark past of this place during the Nazi era, but also the appropriation of the airport area by the population of the city up to the situation today as well as future plans and utopias for the use of this huge area in the middle of the city.
