The GRIDAS is a longstanding social centre in the Scampia neighbourhood. During more than 40 years of institutional neglect, GRIDAS has always been a point of social life, self-managed culture and political struggle in the area. Since 2009, kollektiv orangotango has been collaborating with GRIDAS and its network by carrying out activities in the centre, now under threat of eviction, by contributing to the famous Social Carneval parade and by pursuing its path of collective political art (see for example Il Cardillo, Quarto Piano or more recently Il Viaggio del Mammutino). For us, as for many other activists, GRIDAS has been and continues to be a place of great inspiration and learning. Its militants are friends, teachers and comrades. For this reason, already in the earlier years of this long process, in which the GRIDAS is under threat of eviction, we declared: GRIDAS is not to be touched – Il GRIDAS non si tocca!
To support the GRIDAS in this moment of threat, there is the crowd-funding campaign on Produzione dal Basso:
#IlGridasNonSiTocca
SUPPORT THE GRIDAS!
On Friday, 25 March 2022, GRIDAS, at a special meeting, officially appointed Mirella La Magna as its ‘legal representative’.
We can now defend ourselves in court or, as she commented: ‘Now they can arrest me’.
With our lawyers we will appeal against the civil sentence that we consider unjust.
In any case, we will have to incur legal costs, money that we don’t have because GRIDAS has always been self-financing.
GRIDAS is a collective heritage.
We have launched a crowd-funding campaign on the independent platform Produzioni Dal Basso so that whoever wants to contribute can do so easily: “each according to their possibilities”, every small contribution can make a difference!
Let’s put the tools we have at our disposal: two films which have been donated to us in these years of activity by “special” directors, our companions on the road, who knew how best to tell our story:“Felice!” by Matteo Antonelli and Rosaria Désirée Klain (2006) which was put online thanks to the technical support of Circuito Nomadica in 2010, right at the launch of the #IlGridasNiSiTocca mobilisation in support of our story;
Scampìa Felix by Francesco Di Martino and GRIDAS, a co-production by GRIDAS with the Sicilian collective Frame Off and the independent audiovisual company SMK Factory that we made in 2017, financed with a popular co-production whose timing was punctuated by the stages of the civil trial just around the corner.
We invite initiatives that support us to organise screenings with possible fundraising in order to further spread our struggle, our story that is a story of social liberation “from below” that starts from afar and will not be stopped so easily.
Thank you all for your solidarity and for sharing.
We have never asked anyone for money and this fundraising partly makes us uncomfortable, but we feel it is right to share it.
Write it on the walls, trains and in social media, as artist around Italy and Europe already do: Il GRIDAS Non Si Tocca!!!
