Mapping with Some Call Us Balkans

Invited by the ZKU, which we still remember very well as the location of the release event of Not-an-atlas, we organised a collective mapping workshop with the actors of the cultural cooperation project Some Call Us Balkans in October 2021. “Some Call Us Balkans (SCUB) is a transdisciplinary inquiry that explores and mobilises moments of collective imagination, research & multivocal representations of the Balkan region, beyond borders and nationalisms”. We discussed the basics of critical cartography and explored together the possibilities of how mapping can be a useful tool for the participants, for group building, networking, archiving and documentation of resistance or journeys. At the end of the workshop, there were plenty of very interesting map ideas, two maps dedicated to feminist and socio-ecological counter-strategies in Southeast Europe and the realisation that it has rarely been more important to use a basemap without national borders. The fact that the participants mapped, among other things, the successful gold mining resistance in Rosia Montana brought back good memories of our mapping workshop during a manifestation there in 2013. And last but not least, it is always inspiring to get to know different mapping practices and projects like this Serbo-Croatian Atlas of an African Journey.
